Minecraft is all about building and Exploring and Minecraft movie is a live-action Swedish-American based on the video game Minecraft adapted by Warner Bros. The upcoming film Minecraft Movie filming is set to start in New Zealand.
The production crew of Minecraft will start filming on 7th August 2023. Jason Momoa will be part of the movie and it was also announced that Matt Berry will join Momoa in the cast with an undisclosed role now. Jason Momoa and Torfi Frans Olafsson are also added as producers of the film.
The film will be being distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures and is currently set to release on April 4, 2025, but this might change according to the further production process. Jared Hess is the director of the film, along with Chris Bowman and Hubbel Palmer writing the latest script.
The film will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. Lydia Winters and Mary Parent are also the producers of the film while Cale Boyter is the executive producer.
According to Collider, the early version of the movie was set to focus on the concept of “people taking agency over their experience in [the] digital landscape,” and another version was “the story of a teenage girl and her unlikely group of adventurers” to save their Overworld from an Ender Dragon but it’s still unclear if that story will still be used.

A Minecraft Movie Update (2026)
Updated July 2026. The New Zealand shoot covered in this story became A Minecraft Movie, which was a massive box-office hit after its April 2025 release. A sequel is now underway: at the Minecraft Live event in May 2026, Warner Bros. and Mojang confirmed the follow-up is titled A Minecraft Movie Squared, with filming kicking off in New Zealand in late April 2026 under returning director Jared Hess. Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, Matt Berry, and Jennifer Coolidge are all back, joined by new cast member Kirsten Dunst as Alex. The sequel is set for release on July 23, 2027.
