Kirsten Dunst is stepping into the Overworld — and she’s bringing receipts. The Civil War actress, who landed the coveted role of Alex in the upcoming Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment sequel, took to Instagram on May 13 to confirm that cameras are rolling on A Minecraft Movie 2.
Kirsten Dunst posted a photo of two director’s chairs on set — hers labeled “Alex” and co-star Jack Black‘s labeled “Steve” — with a simple but electrifying caption: “It has begun…..” The post immediately sent fans of the blockbuster franchise into a frenzy, and honestly, rightfully so.
The road to this moment is a fun one. Back in August 2025, Dunst made no secret of her desire to join the sequel, publicly expressing that her kids are obsessed with the first film and that she was eager to be part of a project with serious box office legs. That wish came true in March 2026, when Deadline exclusively broke the news of her casting as Alex — the character who was teased in the end-credits scene of the original movie.
Director Jared Hess is back at the helm, working from a script he co-wrote with Chris Galletta. Hess, speaking about the sequel earlier, made clear he was thrilled to return: the first film had tapped into only a fraction of Minecraft‘s massive world, and he was eager to explore more of it with fans. Returning alongside Black and Dunst is an all-star ensemble that includes Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, Matt Berry, and Jennifer Coolidge.
The original A Minecraft Movie set the entertainment world on fire when it released in April 2025, scoring Warner Bros.’ third-largest opening weekend of all time and shattering expectations for video game adaptations. The sequel is already locked in for a July 23, 2027 release date, giving the production team a solid runway to build on that success.
With production now officially underway and a powerhouse cast in place, A Minecraft Movie 2 is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated blockbusters of 2027.
