St. George in Southern Utah

The production team used the soothing sound of the Santa Clara River and the soft red soil on the Shivwits Band of the Paiute Indian Reservation as a backdrop for some of the film’s key scenes.
Travis Duran, Shivvits Reservation land resource manager, told the St. George News that the film was shot by director Kevin Costner and crew at St. George’s land, and its people were treated with respect.
Travis Duran said: “The best thing was working with Kevin’s crew. We’re all working together and they were more active in asking what they should be careful of,”
He Added- “We’re in cultural sites in a couple of the areas, which I pointed out, and they respected everything.”
Sharing the experience of filming in St.George, St. George News, Director Kevin Costner said:
“Every day, my dream was to film at this other place. We even built a suspension bridge. And we were going to crane our wagons 50 feet in the air over the river, drop them down on that location.”
Costner Added: “So I had it on my head, we built it, we had the cranes out there. And then the big snowpack came. And everybody said, ‘The water’s gonna come up’.”
