Nicole Kidman was never supposed to be in front of the camera on Lioness. She was going to produce it. Then Taylor Sheridan wrote her a character she simply couldn’t walk away from.
Speaking with Extra alongside co-star Zoe Saldaña ahead of Season 3, Kidman recalled how her involvement in the Paramount+ spy thriller evolved from a behind-the-scenes role into one of the most compelling performances of her recent career. She had told Sheridan she was drawn to the espionage world — a genre she had never actually worked in before — but that her constraints were real. With both of her daughters in school at the time, she wasn’t in a position to commit to a full lead role.
Sheridan’s response was to go away and write something specifically shaped around her life and her availability. The character he came back with was Kaitlyn — the commanding, morally complex CIA supervisor at the center of the show’s power structure. Kidman read it, heard Sheridan explain the character’s psychology and inner world, and was immediately sold.

The Character That Crossed Over Into Real Life
What Kidman didn’t expect was how deeply Kaitlyn’s discipline would follow her home from set. She described the character as unusually compartmentalized — someone capable of holding multiple high-stakes realities simultaneously without letting them bleed into each other. Kidman found herself applying that same quality to her own life during filming, using Kaitlyn’s emotional organization as a kind of practical method she could draw on as a working mother.
She described it as almost a form of Method acting — not for a dramatic scene, but for the everyday demands of filming a television series while also being fully present as a parent.
Flying Home Every Chance She Gets
Saldaña offered a warm portrait of how Kidman navigates the production’s social environment, noting that while the rest of the cast trains together, rides horses, goes to concerts, and even spent Thanksgiving together, Kidman heads straight for the airport the moment filming gives her a window. Her daughters — one currently in her junior year and one a freshman — are her priority the second she steps off set.
Kidman described the balancing act simply and without apology: “Multitasking, right?”
What Season 3 Holds
Saldaña, who plays CIA senior case officer and station chief Joe — the operative who runs the Lioness program directly under Kaitlyn’s authority — described the new season as raising the personal stakes to their highest point yet. Joe is facing consequences that have grown directly out of the choices she has made, and the danger is no longer abstract.
Saldaña also reflected on the broader significance of the characters both she and Kidman portray — women operating at the highest levels of intelligence and national security in a genre that rarely centers female perspectives. She described it as an honor to represent a community of women who have historically served their country in silence.
