Ben Affleck Reveals How He Pranked Dunkin’ Customers While Filming a Coffee Commercial

Ben Affleck has shared a funny behind-the-scenes story from one of his Dunkin’ commercials, and it proves one thing very clearly — you should never joke with someone about their coffee.

The Hollywood actor, who is well known for his love of Dunkin’ Donuts, opened up about the moment during a joint interview with Matt Damon while the two were promoting their new movie The Rip. The interview was given to Capital Official radio, where Affleck explained how the prank happened during filming in Medford, Massachusetts.

As per People, while talking about his many Dunkin’ ads, Damon revealed that one commercial never made it to TV. He explained that Affleck stood at a drive-through window and told real customers that Dunkin’ had no coffee available. According to Damon, the idea was funny but also risky.

Affleck confirmed the story and said, “We were in Medford, Massachusetts and telling people, ‘We don’t have coffee.’” He admitted that the reaction from customers was intense. Many of them were on their way to work and depended on their morning coffee. Damon added that some customers were not amused at all, which made the situation even funnier for those filming.

However, Dunkin’ quickly realized the joke could not be used. Damon said the company made it clear that they could never advertise being out of coffee. Even so, Affleck still believed the idea was brilliant and called it “genius.”

Ben Affleck also joked about how customers reacted when he broke the bad news. He did an exaggerated impression of one frustrated customer saying they didn’t wait in line for water.

The story comes as Ben Affleck continues his long partnership with Dunkin’. In 2025, he starred alongside Damon and Tom Brady in a seven-minute Super Bowl commercial, where they brought back the fictional boy band The DunKings. The group first appeared in a 2024 Super Bowl ad that also featured Jennifer Lopez.

That same year, Dunkin’ even released a special drink named after Ben Affleck— the DunKings Iced Coffee, which became available across the U.S.

Ben Affleck and Damon, who have been friends for more than 40 years, recently interviewed each other in a Netflix video to promote The Rip. In that conversation, they talked about growing up together and sharing a deep love for acting at a young age. The full interview was also covered by PEOPLE, which shared more details about their friendship and careers.

The Rip is now streaming on Netflix, and Affleck’s Dunkin’ stories continue to remind fans why his coffee obsession has become part of pop culture.
