Ben Affleck has shared a surprising behind-the-scenes story from one of his biggest early movies, Armageddon (1998). In a recent interview, the actor revealed that he was suffering from food poisoning while filming one of the movie’s most emotional moments — and he was still pushing through the scene.
While promoting his new Netflix film The Rip, Ben Affleck spoke openly about what happened nearly 30 years ago during the filming of Armageddon. The movie, which also starred Bruce Willis, became a huge box office hit and is still remembered for its dramatic and emotional scenes.
According to Ben Affleck, the hardest moment came during his goodbye scene with Bruce Willis, which many fans remember as one of the most touching parts of the film. What viewers didn’t know was that the actor was very ill at the time.
Ben Affleck explained that he had severe food poisoning on the day of filming. Instead of staying home, he showed up to set because he was young and inexperienced and didn’t realize he could ask for a sick day. He said he was vomiting between takes, with a trash can placed nearby so he could rush over as soon as the director yelled “cut.”
Despite being sick, Affleck believes the illness may have actually helped his performance. He joked that feeling so weak and miserable probably added to the real emotion of the scene. At the time, he was still early in his career and didn’t want to disappoint anyone on such a big production.
Affleck shared this story during an interview with Fox 32 Chicago, speaking with entertainment reporter Jake Hamilton. He laughed while recalling the moment and said it was one of the strangest filming experiences of his life.
He also mentioned recently talking about Armageddon with co-star Steve Buscemi at the premiere of The Rip. Both actors agreed that the movie was a wild and unforgettable experience, especially since none of them expected it to become such a massive success.
Over the years, Ben Affleck has shared other fun facts about Armageddon, including how he was asked to work out more and fix his teeth to look more like a movie star. Still, filming while sick stands out as one of his most memorable moments.
This story gives fans a new appreciation for the dedication actors sometimes show behind the scenes. Even when feeling terrible, Affleck showed up — and ended up creating a scene that audiences still remember today.
