Alan Cumming Confirms ‘Romy & Michele’ Sequel Will Start Filming This Summer

Exciting news is here for fans of Romy & Michele’s High School Reunion. The Traitors Season 2 star Alan Cumming has shared a fresh update about the long-awaited sequel to the beloved 1997 comedy.

The Golden Globe-nominated actor revealed that filming for the sequel will begin this summer. He shared the news while appearing on The Jennifer Hudson Show. During the interview, Genie star Alan Cumming said, “And then, this summer, we’re going to do the sequel of Romy & Michele’s High School Reunion.”

Cumming is set to return as Sandy Frink, the rich and funny classmate fans remember from the original movie. He will reunite with his former co-stars Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino, who played best friends Romy White and Michele Weinberger.

The first film, released in 1997, followed Romy and Michele as they returned to their Tucson high school for their 10-year reunion. They wanted to impress their old classmates and show how successful they had become. Over the years, the movie has grown into a true cult classic.

According to earlier reports from Deadline, Kudrow and Sorvino were in final talks in January 2025 to officially return for the sequel. They are not only acting in the new film but will also serve as executive producers.

The sequel will be directed by Tim Federle, while the original writer Robin Schiff has returned to write the new script. This is great news for fans who loved the first film’s humor and heart.

Last year, in an interview with Deadline, Kudrow shared that Schiff had written a “really good” script for the sequel. She explained that the project was closer than ever to becoming real and said, “So it’ll happen, I mean, we’ll see.”
