Mira Sorvino Shares an Emotional Update From the First Day of ‘Romy & Michele 2’ Filming

Mira Sorvino just made the announcement every Romy & Michele fan has been waiting years to hear — the sequel to the beloved 1997 comedy has officially begun filming, and the first day on set has already left the Oscar-winning actress overwhelmed with emotion.

Taking to Instagram on Friday, Sorvino shared a heartfelt video reflecting on wrapping the production’s very first day, describing the project as her “biggest dream” come to life. The clip, which quickly resonated with fans online, carried a simple but powerful message: after 30 years, Romy and Michele are back, and what had long felt like a distant possibility has now become a concrete reality, according to Deadline.

The sequel, officially titled Romy & Michele 2, is being directed by Tim Federle and written by Robin Schiff, the original screenwriter who penned the 1997 film. It will stream as a Hulu Original under 20th Century Studios.

Sorvino reunites with co-star Lisa Kudrow, who returns alongside her as the two eponymous best friends — the lovably optimistic fashionistas who memorably crashed their 10-year high school reunion in the original film, famously claiming to have invented Post-its to impress their former classmates before ultimately embracing who they truly are.

The sequel brings back a significant portion of the original ensemble as well. Alan Cumming, Janeane Garofalo, Camryn Manheim, and Julia Campbell are all confirmed to reprise their roles, joined by newcomers Keegan-Michael Key, Rob Huebel, Breckin Meyer, Patrick Warburton, and Nathan Lee Graham.

Behind the camera, the film feels like a genuine reunion in its own right. Laurence Mark returns as producer, Barry Kemp is back as executive producer, and beloved costume designer Mona May — whose work on the original film became as iconic as the characters themselves — is also returning to dress Romy and Michele for their next chapter. The creative team is rounded out by director of photography Marco Fargnoli, production designer Hillary Gurtler, and editor Brian Olds. Sorvino, Kudrow, and Schiff are all serving as executive producers, with Kimberly McCullough as co-producer and Sarah Shepard overseeing the project for 20th Century Studios.

For Sorvino, the significance of the moment wasn’t lost. In the caption accompanying her Instagram post, she described herself as so full of gratitude that her heart could barely contain it — a sentiment that felt entirely fitting for a project that fans have been hoping for since the original film first became a cultural touchstone nearly three decades ago.

A release date for Romy & Michele 2 on Hulu has not yet been announced.
