The project, which Universal is funding to the tune of $200 million, would also make Cruise the first civilian to perform a spacewalk.

Tom Cruise’s Space Movie Update (2026)
Updated July 2026. The untitled Tom Cruise/Doug Liman space film has had a winding road since it first entered development in 2020. Reports through 2025 and into 2026 have swung between the project being scrapped, reportedly over Cruise’s reluctance to seek government sign-off for NASA cooperation, and being greenlit for a shoot aboard the International Space Station. The most recent reporting describes plans for Cruise, Liman, and a small crew to fly to the ISS aboard a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule, filming a story about a civilian astronaut whose rescue mission goes wrong. As of mid-2026, no confirmed production start date or distributor has been announced, and Cruise has continued other commitments, including the Mission: Impossible franchise, in the meantime.
