Cameras Are Rolling on Live-Action Gundam as Sydney Sweeney and Noah Centineo Begin Filming in Australia

The live-action Gundam movie has officially started filming. Stars Sydney Sweeney and Noah Centineo are now on set at Village Roadshow Studios on the Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia. This is a big moment for fans of the legendary Japanese franchise, which is finally getting its first-ever big-screen, live-action treatment.

Jim Mickle is directing the film. He is best known for his work on Sweet Tooth and Cold in July. The movie is being produced by Legendary Pictures and Netflix, in partnership with Bandai Namco Filmworks, the company behind the original Gundam brand.

In the film, Sweeney and Centineo play two rival mech pilots — soldiers who control massive robotic battle suits. Even though they start out on opposite sides, they are forced to work together. Their mission is to race across the galaxy and save humanity from destruction. The story will mix big action sequences with a strong emotional connection between the two lead characters.

The supporting cast is packed with well-known names. Joining the two leads are Gemma Chua-Tran of Heartbreak High, Jackson White from Tell Me Lies, Shioli Kutsuna from Deadpool & Wolverine, Nonso Anozie of Sweet Tooth, Michael Mando from Better Call Saul, Javon ‘Wanna’ Walton from Under the Bridge, Oleksandr Rudynskyi from The Agency, Ida Brooke from Dune: Part Three, and Jason Isaacs, known for The White Lotus, Harry Potter, and The Death of Stalin.

As Rolling Stone first reported, the Gundam film is expected to bring an estimated $110 million into Queensland’s economy. It will also create jobs for more than 350 local cast and crew members and support a wide range of small businesses across the region.

Queensland’s Minister for the Arts, John-Paul Langbroek, called this a major win for the state. He said the state’s production incentive keeps Queensland competitive on a global level, helping bring big projects like this one to local communities.

Legendary Pictures has a strong history with Queensland. Over the past decade, the studio has filmed several major projects there, including Pacific Rim Uprising, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, and four Monsterverse films. Together, those productions brought in more than $328 million for the local economy.

Herb Gains, EVP of Physical Production at Legendary, said that Queensland has truly become like a second home for the studio. He praised the skilled local crews, world-class facilities, and strong government support that make the region such a reliable production hub.

Screen Queensland CEO Jacqui Feeney added that productions like Gundam open important doors for new and emerging talent in the local screen industry. Through a special attachment program, up-and-coming professionals get the chance to work directly on major productions, learning from experienced veterans in the field.

With a powerhouse cast, a beloved source material, and one of Australia’s finest studios as its base, Gundam is already one of the most talked-about productions in the world right now. Filming is currently underway on the Gold Coast, and more updates are expected in the coming months.
