Sakra Trailer Explained

Sakra Trailer Explained: A 2023 wuxia film Sakra is adapted from the wuxia novel Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils which is written by Jin Yong and directed by Donnie Yen and is set to release in theatres in Malaysia on 16 January 2023.

The trailer started with Donnie Yen played as Qiao Feng and the murder created unrest, threatening the integrity of the Song Dynasty. Qiao Feng “I am not a hero…. I’m just an ordinary person who sticks to the right path.” The setup of the film is compelling and full of action as shown in the trailer with so many enemies and we can see Yen taking on multiple enemies at once.

The film follows Khitan-born Qiao Feng who loses his parents at a very young age and was raised by a couple from the Song Empire, which is at war with the Khitan-led Liao Empire. He was blamed for the murder of deputy chief Ma Dayuan and also his parents. He vows to find answers and fight to clear his name and honor his father’s wishes. Here is the official trailer of the film.

In December 2022, it was announced that the film Sakra was set for release in Malaysia on 16 January 2023 and distributed by Mandarin Motion Pictures.

Sakra: How Donnie Yen’s Directorial Return Fared

Updated July 2026. Sakra, Donnie Yen’s first film as director in nearly two decades, saw mixed reviews (67% on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics calling the plot overstuffed) but strong commercial numbers where it counted: it ranked among mainland China’s most-streamed films of 2023, and in Singapore and Malaysia it landed among each country’s top five and six highest-grossing Asian films of the year, respectively. It also won the outstanding streaming movie award at Macau’s Golden Swan festival in December 2023. Some critics have since argued the wuxia epic will age well, with one ScreenRant piece predicting future generations may come to view it as a martial-arts classic despite its rocky initial reception.
