Gary Robert Rossington was an American musician and songwriter who is no more among us and died at the age of 71.
The band confirmed Rossington’s death news on its Facebook account but the cause of death is not specified in the post. Rossington was the last surviving member of Lynyrd Skynyrd and was active in the band till his death.
The post says “It is with our deepest sympathy and sadness that we have to advise, that we lost our brother, friend, family member, songwriter, and guitarist, Gary Rossington, today, Gary is now with his Skynyrd brothers and family in heaven and playing it pretty like he always does. Please keep Dale, Mary, Annie, and the entire Rossington family in your prayers and respect the family’s privacy at this difficult time.”

Rossington suffered many heart problems and underwent many emergency heart surgery in 2021. Gary Rossington guitarist survived several accidents in the 1970s and car accident in 1976, and a plane crash in 1977 that killed three members of the band.
Rossington had two daughters with Dale Krantz-Rossington. Along with his wife, he formed The Rossington Band, which released two albums in 1986 and 1988.

In Memoriam: Gary Rossington’s Legacy Continues
Updated July 2026. Gary Rossington, the last surviving original member of Lynyrd Skynyrd, died of long-term health complications on March 5, 2023, at 71 — just a day before this post published. Per his wishes that the band carry on without him, Lynyrd Skynyrd kept touring, and in 2026 announced an expanded headlining trek alongside Foreigner. The band has also confirmed plans to build a new album from roughly 30 unreleased songs co-written with Rossington that resurfaced after his passing, ensuring his songwriting keeps reaching fans.
