How To Train Your Dragon 2 Live-Action Sequel Starts Filming, Director Shares First Update

Filming has officially started on the live-action sequel How to Train Your Dragon 2, marking a major step forward for one of Universal Pictures and DreamWorks’ most popular fantasy franchises.

Director and writer Dean DeBlois confirmed the news on January 26, 2026, by sharing a behind-the-scenes photo from the first day of principal photography. The image shows DeBlois smiling on set and also reveals a new red-colored logo, giving fans their first official look at the sequel’s branding. In his caption, DeBlois wrote that the team is “back in the saddle,” clearly signaling the start of a new adventure.

The first live-action How To Train Your Dragon, released in 2025, was a strong success at the global box office. The film earned $636.6 million worldwide and received a 97% Verified Hot audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. The sequel was approved even before the first movie arrived in theaters, showing strong confidence from the studio.

Several fan-favorite cast members are returning. Mason Thames is back as Hiccup, with Nico Parker returning as Astrid. Gerard Butler once again plays Stoick, while Nick Frost returns as Gobber. Other returning actors include Julian Dennison as Fishlegs, Bronwyn James as Ruffnut, Gabriel Howell as Snotlout, and Harry Trevaldwyn as Tuffnut.

One of the most talked-about casting updates involves Hiccup’s mother, Valka. After months of speculation, it has been confirmed that Cate Blanchett will play the role in live action. She previously voiced Valka in the 2014 animated sequel, making her return especially meaningful for longtime fans.

The sequel also introduces a major villain. Ólafur Darri Ólafsson has been cast as Drago, a powerful enemy central to the story. Another character, Eret, has been teased as an important addition, though casting details have not yet been announced.

According to reporting from ScreenRant, the film is on schedule for its theatrical release on June 11, 2027. The live-action sequel will adapt the story from the 2014 animated film, which includes one of the franchise’s most emotional moments.

With cameras now rolling, expectations are high as the production moves forward, building on the success of the first live-action installment while preparing audiences for a bigger and more emotional chapter ahead.
