James Gunn has had enough of one particular Batman theory circulating online — and his response was about as direct as it gets.
The DC Studios co-chief took to Threads to address one of the most persistent rumors surrounding Matt Reeves’ long-awaited sequel The Batman 2, which is currently in production in London with Robert Pattinson returning as the Dark Knight. Social media had convinced itself that Reeves was simultaneously filming The Batman 2 and a third installment back-to-back — and that this arrangement was largely responsible for how long the sequel took to get off the ground in the first place.
Gunn’s response, when asked directly to confirm or deny the rumor, was two words: “I can deny.”
According to Variety, that brief but definitive statement puts to rest a theory that had gained significant traction online and kept resurfacing as production on The Batman 2 finally got underway.

Why the Rumor Made Sense to People
The back-to-back filming theory wasn’t entirely without precedent as a Hollywood strategy. The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions were both shot as a single combined production following the original film’s massive success. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest and At World’s End followed the same approach. Marvel famously shot Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame across one continuous production spanning a full year.
Given how long The Batman 2 spent in development — it was originally supposed to open in October 2026 before being delayed to 2027 and now pushed again to February 18, 2028 — fans had been searching for explanations, and the back-to-back theory filled that gap neatly. The additional delay from 2027 to 2028 was explained by Warner Bros. as giving Reeves more time in post-production rather than any issue with the shoot itself.
What We Know About the Film
The Batman 2 is currently filming with Pattinson joined by Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Charles Dance, Brian Tyree Henry, and Sebastian Koch. Reeves co-wrote the screenplay with Mattson Tomlin, and plot details — including which roles the supporting cast are playing — remain under wraps.
The film now opens in theaters on February 18, 2028, nearly six years after the original The Batman debuted in March 2022.
