Nearly three decades after their breakout cult comedy, the duo fans never stopped asking about has finally reunited — and this time, cameras are rolling. 20th Century Studios confirmed on June 8 that production on the long-awaited sequel to Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion is officially underway. The studio marked the milestone by sharing a photo on Instagram of Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino seated in matching director’s chairs on set — the backs of the chairs reading simply: “Romy and Michele 2.”
“The reunion you’ve been waiting for!” the studio captioned the post.

The Original Gang Is Coming Back
The sequel isn’t just bringing back the two leads. Janeane Garofalo, Alan Cumming, Camryn Manheim, and Julia Campbell are all reprising their roles from the 1997 original — meaning almost the entire core cast is returning. Original screenwriter Robin Schiff has also come back to pen the follow-up, keeping the creative voice of the first film intact.
Filming is taking place in Los Angeles, with Tim Federle — best known for directing High School Musical: The Musical: The Series — at the helm. The finished film will land exclusively on Hulu, though no release date has been announced yet.
Fresh Faces Joining the Fun
Alongside the returning cast, several new names have been added to the ensemble. Keegan-Michael Key, Rob Huebel, Breckin Meyer, Patrick Warburton, and Nathan Lee Graham are all confirmed as new additions. Details about their characters and the sequel’s storyline remain under wraps for now.
A Long Time Coming
This sequel has been years in the making. Mira Sorvino first publicly confirmed the project was happening back in January 2025, and during a November 2024 interview with PEOPLE, she teased that nearly every key character from the original would be returning. As recently as May 11, Kudrow told viewers on Watch What Happens Live! that filming was getting closer — and now it’s here.
Sorvino has spoken openly about just how much the original film continues to mean to audiences. During a March appearance on the podcast Work in Progress, she recalled receiving a standing ovation when the film was screened for fans in recent years, describing herself as continuously amazed by the movie’s enduring emotional impact.
The original Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion followed two Los Angeles women who invent fictional success stories to impress their old classmates at a 10-year high school reunion. Its sharp humor, iconic fashion, and genuine heart turned it into a beloved cult classic — one that clearly still has plenty of fans ready to welcome it back.
