Isaiah Washington an American actor and media personality well-known for portraying Dr. Preston Burke in the series Grey’s Anatomy announced his retirement from the entertainment industry.
Washington announced the news on his tweeter account by tweeting, “It is with a heavy heart and a sense of relief that I am announcing my early retirement from the entertainment industry today. Those who have been following/Witnessing my journey here on Twitter since 2011 all know that I have fought the good fight, but it seems that the haters, provocateurs, and Useful Idiots have won.”
“I’m no longer interested in the back and forth regarding a ‘color construct’ that keeps us human beings divided nor am I interested in politics or anything vitriolic. I will be traveling this great country before it falls into Socialism and then Communism. Until then, know that this Frederick Douglass Conservative will keep his powder dry and loves you all! I am truly grateful for your support over the years.” he added
“It looks like CORSICANA #CorsicanaMovie may be the last time you see me as an Actor born here in America. Just know that I will be posting a few pictures of my retirement shenanigans here and there but until then. Be safe out there. Your loved ones love you and need you. SALUTE!” Washington ended.

Isaiah Washington’s ‘Retirement’ Lasted About a Day (2026)
Updated July 2026. The retirement announced in this post didn’t stick. Within about a day, Isaiah Washington reversed course, saying the outpouring of support convinced him to keep working, and he launched a GoFundMe campaign for a passion project instead: playing real-life lawman Bass Reeves in an independent film. That Bass Reeves interest arrived around the same time Hollywood was already telling a version of the same story: Lawmen: Bass Reeves, the David Oyelowo-led limited series, had filmed and released to strong reviews. Washington has continued acting and advocacy work in the years since, rather than stepping away from the industry as his brief post first suggested.
