Silver Falls, Colorado Is Not Real — But the Canadian Locations Behind ‘My Life With the Walter Boys’ Absolutely Are

My Life With the Walter Boys returned to Netflix on August 6 with its third season — and if you’ve ever wondered whether the breathtaking ranch landscapes and small-town streets of Silver Falls, Colorado actually exist somewhere you could visit, the answer is yes. Just not in Colorado.

According to PEOPLE, the hit Netflix series based on Ali Novak’s novel has filmed across six different regions of Alberta, Canada throughout its run — with Calgary serving as the primary production hub across all three seasons. The fictional Silver Falls is a composite of multiple real Canadian locations that have been carefully dressed and combined to create a single coherent world.

Calgary: The Heart of the Production

The city of Calgary has anchored the show since season one. Key filming locations within the city have included Girletz Rodeo Ranch, Heritage Park Historical Village, The Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium, Splitsville Glamorgan, the University of Calgary, and Foothills Athletic Park.

Noah LaLonde, who plays Cole Walter, described his time filming season one in Calgary in a 2023 BELLO Magazine interview as one of the most significant experiences of his life — a five-month stretch with people he considers some of the most extraordinary he has ever encountered, in a place that gave him friendships he carries with him every day.

New Locations for Season 3

Season 3 expanded the show’s filming footprint into the town of High River, which provided a range of distinct settings. A pivotal moment between Jackie and Cole in the season premiere was filmed at Sheep River Falls. The town hall sequence in episode two used the Museum of the Highwood, while episode three’s banquet scene was captured at Highwood Centre.

Later in the season, a romantic proposal took place at George Lane Memorial Park, and episode nine sent characters to both Tattoos by Petrus Ink and the Knee Deep Bar & Grill.

The rural hamlet of Millarville also featured prominently through Season 3, with Black Diamond Land & Cattle Co. providing the backdrop for Alex’s rodeo storyline across multiple episodes.

The Ranch Is a Real Place

One of the most frequently asked questions from fans of the show is whether the Walter family ranch is an actual working property — and it is. The home is CL Ranch, located west of Calgary. Learning to ride horses on an actual working ranch was part of the preparation for the cast, with Nikki Rodriguez — who plays lead character Jackie Howard — describing the experience as therapeutic and one of her favorite new skills. Ashby Gentry, who plays rodeo rider Alex Walter, had to work through genuine anxiety about horses before filming began after being thrown from one at age ten.

The High School Behind Silver Falls High

Much of the show’s high school setting was filmed at Chestermere High School, which the production used extensively in season one — including the sports fields, courts, classrooms, and front entrance. Many real Chestermere students appeared as extras. Additional schools, including Holy Trinity Academy in Okotoks, have also featured across later seasons.

My Life With the Walter Boys Season 3 is now streaming on Netflix.
