Under Paris 2 Is Now Filming in France — Netflix’s Biggest French Hit Is Coming Back With a Vengeance

Netflix is making waves again. The streaming giant has officially started production on Under Paris 2,” the highly anticipated sequel to its record-breaking French shark thriller. Filming is now underway in the south of France, and the stakes are bigger than ever.

The original film took the world by surprise when it dropped in 2024. Since then, it has pulled in over 102 million views, making it the most popular French film in Netflix history. It also holds the title of the second most popular non-English language film on the entire platform — a massive achievement for a movie that was reportedly turned down by several French studios and financiers before finding a home on Netflix.

Now, the story continues.

Bérénice Bejo and Nassim Lyes are both back, reprising their roles as Sophia and Adil. They are joined by returning cast members Guillaume Gouix, Philippe Bas, Manon Bresch, and Anne Marivin. Fans of the first film will be glad to see the core team back together.

The sequel picks up three years after the Paris triathlon disaster — the catastrophic event at the heart of the first movie. In that story, a group of mutated sharks invaded the River Seine, began reproducing at a dangerous rate, and ultimately triggered a chain reaction that left much of the French capital completely flooded.

According to the official logline shared by Variety, “Sophia” and “Adil” reunite for a high-risk mission to track down Lilith — the original predator — deep in the shark-infested Seine. But as they dive deeper, they begin to uncover a reality far more shocking than anything they expected.

Behind the camera, things are also changing. Xavier Gens, who wrote and directed the first film, is stepping back from the director’s chair. Taking over is Alexandre Aja, the filmmaker best known for “Piranha 3D.” Aja is no stranger to underwater chaos, and his passion for this project is clear.

Speaking about joining the sequel, Aja said, “I love Paris, and I always wanted to make a shark movie, so it was an obvious yes when the opportunity came to take the story even deeper.”

Gens hasn’t walked away entirely — he stays on as a co-writer and associate producer, working alongside Aja, Gregory Levasseur, Frédéric Garcia, William Laboury, and Fanny Talmone. Aja and Levasseur are credited with the adaptation. Vincent Roget, known for “Let Me Be,” is on board as the film’s producer.

When the first “Under Paris” hit Netflix, critics took notice. Variety praised it warmly, comparing it favorably to the king of all shark films — “Jaws” — calling it a thriller that “swims rather than sinks” and one that “adds life to a genre that’s been bloodless for far too long.”

With a proven cast, a bold new director, and a flooded Paris full of deadly surprises, “Under Paris 2” is already shaping up to be one of Netflix’s most exciting upcoming releases. No official release date has been announced yet, but production is now rolling — and the sharks are hungry.
