Tom Welling Reveals Why He Stayed Away from Smallville Cast After Long Filming Days

Tom Welling is opening up about his time on the hit TV series Smallville — and why he did not spend much time with his castmates when the cameras stopped rolling.

The Choice Star, who played Clark Kent/Superman on the popular WB show and was also cast in The Boys, shared his honest thoughts during a panel at Vancouver FanExpo 2026. The superhero drama ran for 10 seasons from 2001 to 2011, and Welling says those years were intense.

Speaking at the event, Evil Dead Rise star Welling explained that filming each season took about 10 months. Because of the long schedule, he felt completely drained when he was not on set.

“I would disappear,” he told fans during the panel.

He said that when filming wrapped, he did not feel like socializing with his coworkers. Tom Welling shared that after working late hours, he simply wanted rest. “The last thing you really want to do, when you’re not working, is hang out with your co-workers,” he said.

The actor explained that some weekends were especially tough. He would finish work at 6:00 a.m. on a Saturday and return to set by 5:00 a.m. on Monday. With such little time off, he chose to go home and relax.

“I would just go home and do nothing and hang out with my dogs,” Welling added. “I didn’t have any bandwidth for anything else.”

Even though he kept to himself back then, Welling is now reconnecting with his former castmates. He currently hosts the Smallville rewatch podcast TalkVille with his former co-star Michael Rosenbaum, who played Lex Luthor on the series.

Welling is also busy with new projects. He is set to appear in the upcoming comedy film Chasing Summer, written by Iliza Shlesinger. The movie is expected to premiere at the Sundance Film Festival next year in Park City, Utah.

In a recent interview with PEOPLE, Tom Welling also spoke about his quiet life away from Hollywood. He now lives on a ranch in Northern California with his wife, Jessica Rose, and their two children.

The actor shared that the ranch life feels peaceful and real. The family raises American sport horses and jumpers. While his wife leads the work on the ranch, Tom Welling says he is happy to help.

After years of playing Superman on screen, it seems Tom Welling has found his own version of a calm and grounded life off-screen.
