Cameras Were Already Rolling When Tarek El Moussa Nearly Made an Illegal Move on Flip or Flop’s Very First Filmed Episode

Not every behind-the-scenes filming story is glamorous — and Tarek El Moussa is proof of that. The HGTV star just revealed that during the filming of the very first episode of Flip or Flop, he came dangerously close to breaking the law without even realizing it.

The confession, shared in a candid May 28 Instagram post and first reported by People, takes viewers back to summer 2011 — when cameras followed El Moussa and his then-wife Christina Haack to a house in La Habra, California for what would become the show’s pilot episode.

What the Cameras Actually Captured

The property had one major headache — a large, empty backyard pool with zero equipment and a repair bill that didn’t fit the budget. So El Moussa, by his own admission knowing “nothing about construction” at the time, came up with what he thought was a smart on-set solution.

His plan? Dump all the demolition debris straight into the pool, cover it with dirt, and film over it like it never happened.

Cameras were rolling. The crew was watching. And nobody caught it — until later.

The Law Had Other Plans

What El Moussa didn’t know during filming was that his cost-cutting idea was a direct violation of California Penal Code 374.3 — which classifies unauthorized waste disposal on any property, including privately owned land, as illegal dumping, punishable by fines of up to $10,000.

He caught the mistake before it went too far, but looking back at that early filming footage now, he can only laugh.

“Turns out I was just a guy with a hole in the ground and bad ideas,” he joked in his post caption.

From That Shaky First Filming Day to Two Hit Shows

That bumpy pilot shoot eventually gave birth to one of HGTV’s longest-running hits — Flip or Flop aired for nine seasons between 2013 and 2022, with El Moussa and Haack filming dozens of renovations together despite splitting personally in 2016.

Now El Moussa is back in front of the cameras for The Flip Off — a new HGTV competition series featuring both Christina Haack and his current wife Heather Rae El Moussa. The show debuted in January 2025 and has already been picked up for a second season later this year.

From almost-illegal pool plans to back-to-back renewals — quite the filming journey.
