Actress Sophie Turner has shared honest thoughts about working on period dramas and why she once promised herself she would avoid them. While filming her upcoming movie The Dreadful, Turner said she quickly remembered why those projects can be so difficult.
In a recent interview with Porter magazine, Turner explained that after Game of Thrones ended in 2019, she made a strong decision. She did not want to work on medieval or historical stories for a while. She had spent many years playing Sansa Stark, starting when she was just 13 years old, and felt she needed space to grow beyond that role.
Turner said that when Game of Thrones finished, it felt like a big ending in her life. She described it as something she needed time to process. She wanted to discover who she was as an actor and as a person, without being connected to one famous character.
However, she later agreed to star in The Dreadful, a Gothic horror movie set in the 15th century. While the story interested her, the filming experience reminded her why period movies can be uncomfortable. Turner shared that actors often spend long hours outside in cold weather, wearing heavy dresses that are not warm. She also joked that there is mud everywhere, which makes long shooting days even harder.
Even so, Turner said there were special moments on set. One of the biggest comforts for her was working again with Kit Harington, her former Game of Thrones co-star. In the new movie, they play lovers, which is very different from their earlier roles as relatives. Turner said having Harington on set made her feel safe and supported. She explained that they understand each other without needing many words, which helped her feel grounded during filming.
The Dreadful does not yet have an official release date, but it is just one of several projects Turner is working on. She is also part of a new Prime Video series called Steal and is preparing to star as Lara Croft in an upcoming Tomb Raider show. Turner said she is excited to try new and different roles, even if they come with challenges.
Her story shows that while period dramas can be tough, they can also bring growth, learning, and meaningful reunions for actors.
