Shogun’s success since this BTS story has been hard to overstate — the FX/Hulu limited series turned continuing drama broke Emmy history with 18 wins in a single season, obliterating the previous record of 13, and took home Best Drama Series among 25 total nominations. Hiroyuki Sanada signed on to return as Lord Yoshii Toranaga for a second season, with FX confirming the show would continue the story beyond Shogun’s original single-season format. Production on season two began in Vancouver, continuing the show’s practice of building elaborate Japan-set production design outside Japan itself. With the franchise now planned across multiple seasons, Shogun has shifted from a one-off prestige adaptation into an ongoing tentpole series for FX.
