Filming for Sense and Sensibility began in the UK in July 2025. Before production started, the location team spent around three months scouting locations across the south coast.
The search covered areas from Dorset to Cornwall, with the filmmakers looking for historic homes and natural landscapes that could bring Jane Austen’s world to life. The movie was filmed across Dorset, Dartmoor, South Devon, Oxfordshire, Kent, Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire and London.
📍Kingston Russell House, Dorset, Norland Park
Kingston Russell House in west Dorset was used as Norland Park, the Dashwood family’s ancestral home. The house is a beautiful 17th-century mansion and is one of the most important locations in the movie.
The production team found the house while searching along the Dorset coast. Its lived-in look and slightly wild surroundings helped create the natural feel that director Georgia Oakley wanted for the film. Kingston Russell House is a private home and is not open to the public.
📍Parnham Park, Dorset, Norland Park Lake
The Norland Park lake scenes were filmed at Parnham Park in Dorset rather than at Kingston Russell House.
The historic estate provided the perfect countryside setting for the scenes around Norland Park. Unlike Kingston Russell House, Parnham Park is open to visitors, making it one of the locations fans can explore.
📍Ditsworthy Warren House, Dartmoor, Barton Cottage
Ditsworthy Warren House on Dartmoor was used as Barton Cottage, the new home of the Dashwood family.
The remote farmhouse has a worn and natural appearance, which suited the family’s change in lifestyle after leaving Norland Park. The location is surrounded by the wild landscape of Dartmoor, giving the cottage scenes a very different feel from the grand family home.
The location was also previously seen in Steven Spielberg’s War Horse.
Filming at the remote site was not easy. The production team had to plan around the weather, carry out ecological surveys and make changes to the area before filming. Wild ponies could also be seen around the location while the crew was working.
📍Mothecombe Beach, South Devon — Barton Beach
Mothecombe Beach in South Devon was used for the beach scenes involving Marianne and Willoughby.
One of the important scenes filmed here is Marianne’s fall, when she hurts her ankle and is rescued by Willoughby. The beach is part of the Flete Estate and sits near the mouth of the River Erme.
The filmmakers chose the coast instead of the rolling countryside described in the original story. The area’s rocks, cliffs and open sea gave the scene a more dramatic look.
Interestingly, parts of the same estate were also used in the 1995 Sense and Sensibility movie starring Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet.
📍Broughton Castle, Oxfordshire, Barton Park
Broughton Castle in North Oxfordshire was used as Barton Park, the home of Sir John Middleton.
The historic castle is a 14th-century moated manor near Banbury and is surrounded by large areas of parkland.
The production used Broughton Castle for more than one part of the movie. It also appeared as an inn in Hampshire and was used for the grounds of Cleveland House, where the film’s duel scene takes place.
Broughton Castle is open to visitors, so fans can explore the historic setting.
Penshurst Place, Kent, Barton Assembly Rooms
The country dance where Marianne and Willoughby become closer was filmed at Penshurst Place in Kent.
Penshurst Place is a historic 14th-century estate with a long connection to film and television productions. Its old rooms and grand setting helped create the right look for the Regency-era dance scene in Sense and Sensibility.
The estate has also appeared in productions such as Wolf Hall and Mary Queen of Scots.
📍Knebworth House, Hertfordshire, Cleveland House
Knebworth House in Hertfordshire was used as Cleveland House, the home of the Palmers.
This is an important part of the story because it is where Marianne becomes seriously ill.
Knebworth House is one of England’s well-known filming locations. The historic house has previously appeared in movies and TV shows including Batman, Harry Potter, The Crown, and The Gentlemen.
The house is also open to visitors.

The London ball scenes were filmed at West Wycombe Park in Buckinghamshire.
The estate has an elegant Italianate design, making it a good match for the grand social world shown in the movie.
There is also an interesting connection between the location and the story. West Wycombe Park is owned by the Dashwood family, the same name used by the central family in Jane Austen’s novel.
The location has also appeared in productions such as Cranford, Little Dorrit, Downton Abbey, and Bridgerton.
📍Rainham Hall, London, Portman Square Townhouse
Rainham Hall in London was used for the interiors of Mrs. Jennings’ Portman Square townhouse.
The historic house dates back to the 18th century and is now connected to the film in another special way. A Sense and Sensibility filming exhibition is being held there, featuring costumes, accessories and props from the movie.
Rainham Hall is also a National Trust property and can be visited by the public.
📍Lincoln’s Inn, London, Portman Square Exterior
The exterior of Mrs. Jennings’ Portman Square townhouse was filmed at Lincoln’s Inn.
The historic London location helped the production create the look of Regency-era London without relying heavily on computer effects.
Other London scenes were also filmed around Lincoln’s Inn Fields and Horse Guards Parade.
📍National Gallery, London, Royal Academy Scene
One of the movie’s emotional gallery scenes was filmed inside the National Gallery in Trafalgar Square.
The production filmed there after the gallery had closed, with the crew beginning work around 2am. The location helped give the scene a real historic atmosphere while keeping the production close to the period setting of the story.
