The 2023 Annecy International Animation Film Festival will be held from June 11-17 and DreamWorks Animation will have the world premiere of its upcoming American computer-animated coming-of-age fantasy action–comedy film Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken on June 15.
DreamWorks Animation President Margie Cohn said, “We are excited to showcase our newest projects to the global animation community at Annecy. As a studio that celebrates creativity and innovation, it’s an honor for us to participate in this annual event and share our passion for animation with fans from around the world.”

The story follows a shy adolescent Ruby Gillman who gets to know that she comes from a fabled royal family of legendary sea krakens and she belongs in the depths of the waters and the sea is even bigger than she could have ever imagined. Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken film is set to release on June 30, 2023.

Update: ‘Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken’ Found New Life on Netflix
Updated July 2026. The DreamWorks film underwhelmed in theaters, earning just $46.1 million worldwide against a $70 million budget and becoming one of the studio’s lowest-grossing releases. Its fortunes turned after arriving on Netflix on February 20, 2024, where it found a much larger audience and became a recurring presence on the platform’s most-watched charts. That streaming success has kept the door open for future installments — while a theatrical sequel at the original’s budget level looks unlikely, the film’s director has said he’d love to explore the story threads left open in the first movie, and Ruby’s continued popularity online makes some kind of follow-up plausible.
