Paul Dano is looking back at one of his most memorable roles — and he’s admitting it wasn’t easy. The 41-year-old The Art of Love star recently spoke with The Guardian on April 9 about his experience filming the beloved 2006 comedy-drama Little Miss Sunshine. In the interview, Dano opened up about what it was really like to play Dwayne, a teenager who takes a strict vow of silence — and what happened behind the camera when directors felt they couldn’t quite read his performance.
In Little Miss Sunshine, Dwayne refuses to speak until he reaches his dream of becoming a fighter pilot. He communicates only through words written on a notepad. His plan falls apart when he learns he is colorblind — making his dream impossible. That moment leads to a powerful emotional breakdown where he finally speaks again.
A reader asked Dano which half of the film was harder to shoot — the silent first half or the emotional second half. His answer was honest.
In the interview with The Guardian, Dano recalled the early days on set, saying the directors — Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris — kept asking for more from him during a dinner table scene. He couldn’t speak, so it was difficult for them to see what he was doing from the outside.
“But when they watched it back, they said: ‘It’s there, we see it,'” Dano shared, calling it a huge relief. He added that stepping into the unknown of total silence was “pretty challenging.”
The film starred Greg Kinnear, Toni Collette, Abigail Breslin, Alan Arkin, Steve Carell, and Dano as a quirky, struggling family trying to get young Breslin to a beauty pageant in California.
Dano also talked about his role as Beach Boys legend Brian Wilson in the 2014 film Love & Mercy. Wilson, who passed away in 2025 at the age of 82, left a deep impression on Dano.
“I spent a bunch of time with Brian before filming,” Dano said. He described how Wilson would light up the moment anyone brought up music, and revealed he even got to sing with Wilson and his touring band a few times — something he called “amazing.”
Earlier in 2026, Dano joined Kinnear, Collette, and Breslin at the Sundance Film Festival to mark the 20th anniversary of Little Miss Sunshine. The cast gathered to honor the film’s legacy and remembered the late Alan Arkin, who passed away in 2023 at age 89.
Greg Kinnear, 62, told PEOPLE that the group shared a toast in Arkin’s memory the night before the screening. He also gave a shoutout to Steve Carell, who was unable to attend.
Dano recalled a truly special moment from the film’s very first Sundance screening — the audience began clapping in the middle of the movie, just like a live stage show. “That was a distinct Sundance memory for me,” he said.
Little Miss Sunshine went on to earn four Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture. Alan Arkin won for Best Supporting Actor, and writer Michael Arndt took home the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.
