Nicole Kidman has shared a surprising rule she follows while filming intimate scenes with co-stars. The Oscar-winning actor recently opened up about the issue during a fun and honest conversation on the “Las Culturistas” podcast hosted by Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers.
During the interview, the 58-year-old star explained that she has a very strong sense of smell, and that can make filming romantic moments difficult if a co-star has bad breath. Kidman said smell is something she notices immediately when working closely with someone on set.
“I’m very, very smell sensitive,” Kidman said during the podcast. She explained that she can quickly feel drawn to someone—or pushed away—based only on their scent.
The actor then revealed what she called her biggest “dealbreaker” when filming romantic or kissing scenes. According to Kidman, bad breath from a co-star is something she simply cannot ignore.
“You could be the most gorgeous guy,” she said. “But if you come near me with bad breath, I’m out. You could not offer me enough money.”
The “Babygirl” star also remembered a funny moment from filming the hit HBO drama “Big Little Lies.” In the series, Alexander Skarsgård played Perry Wright, the abusive husband of Kidman’s character Celeste Wright. The two actors had several intense scenes together.
Kidman recalled one moment when Skarsgård ate a falafel sandwich right before they had to film a kissing scene.
The actress said she quickly spoke up about it. She jokingly told him to “put the falafel away” because the smell made filming the romantic scene very difficult. Kidman explained that if actors are supposed to look like they are deeply in love, things like strong food smells can break the moment.
The comment made the podcast hosts laugh, and Kidman joked that the actor probably never ate falafel again before filming a kiss.
She also shared another surprising detail during the conversation. When asked about the best-smelling person she has ever met, Kidman immediately named global music star Rihanna.
Kidman said the singer smells “intoxicating,” adding that the rumors about Rihanna’s incredible scent are completely true.
The lighthearted interview gave fans a rare look into the small but very real challenges actors face while filming emotional and romantic scenes on set.
Even after decades in Hollywood, Nicole Kidman continues to share honest stories about life behind the camera—showing that sometimes the smallest details, like what someone eats before a scene, can make a big difference during filming.
