Netflix Released the “Ripley” series this spring on April 4, 2024, which created a stir among the audience.
Netflix‘s Crime Thriller Hit Ripley is based on Patricia Highsmith‘s 1955 crime novel “The Talented Mr. Ripley,” and All of Us Strangers star Andrew Scott plays as Tom Ripley in the series.
Recent reports have confirmed that Netflix users are unable to complete the 8-part series Ripley due to an ‘annoying’ filming decision.
Viewers don’t understand whether they love it or hate it. The reason fans say and think so about the Ripley series is its controversial filming choice.
Not long ago, Ripley Creator and Showrunner Steven Zaillian Hinted at Ripley Season 2 saying There’s a Lot More With Tom Ripley. But now the bad news for Season 2 is that Netflix users are staying away from it due to the series’ controversial filming choices.
Actually, if you have seen this series or seen its pictures and its trailer, then you would have noticed that this entire series Used a black and white theme as a filming choice.
Fleabag actor Andrew Scott, starring as a notorious swindler, attempts to infiltrate the world of glamor and wealth.
The series has been praised by many fans but has been disappointed by its unique features because it is entirely black and white.
As per independent Reports, a Fan said:-
“I didn’t last the first episode. The cinematography is so annoying.”
Others also commented:-
“Why on earth is Ripley filmed in black and white? Surely the only reason to not film in colour previously was technology. Totally killed it for me, the dog seems quite OK with it though.”
Another Viewer said:-
“Black and white is a good way to keep the budget down but adds nothing.”
Show Creator Steven Zaillian revealed that they had decided to make the film in black and white while making the show, inspired by their own experiences.
Speaking with Vanity Fair, Zaillian said:-
“The edition of the Ripley book I had on my desk had an evocative black-and-white photograph on the cover,”
“As I was writing, I held that image in my mind. Black and white fits this story—and it’s gorgeous.”
Now, judging by the reviews people have given, it seems that people have lost the feeling of watching Ripley, because A viewer writes further:-
“Really enjoying Ripley on Netflix except I’m mad as hell that it’s in black and white.”
Another added:-
“What a crime to make a sexy crime show set in 1960s Italy and not do it in color.”
While in contrast to these viewers, some artistically inclined people enjoyed the cinematography and argued that the Netflix series created an “atmosphere” unlike the original film.
Another Netflix user who watched the series said that the brilliant decision to film Ripley in rich black and white intensifies the moodiness and tension.
One person complained against the filming of the Ripley filming:-
“I would not have survived before colour television was invented.. tried to sit down to watch Ripley, but it being filmed in black and white makes it a no-go for me. It makes my eyes go all wonky,”
Another responded:-
“Why is the Netflix show Ripley in black and white? They had colour film in 1955, when the first book, The Talented Mr Ripley appeared. It’s a waste not to film Mongibello in colour… but then again I suppose the book was in black and white.”
But on the contrary, the black and white style used in Dunkirk Star Cillian Murphy‘s Oscar-winning film Oppenheimer distracted people’s attention.
