A new Netflix coming-of-age comedy series with a seriously impressive creative pedigree has officially begun production — and the people behind it have a track record of turning personal, unconventional stories into genuinely beloved television.
I Suck at Girls began filming in Los Angeles on July 16, 2026, with production scheduled to continue through October 16, according to What’s On Netflix. The series is based on the New York Times bestselling autobiography of the same name by Justin Halpern, who is also serving as showrunner alongside Patrick Schumacker.

The Creative Team
The names behind I Suck at Girls immediately signal the kind of production this is. Halpern is known for his work on Abbott Elementary, while Schumacker comes from Harley Quinn. Executive producers include Bill Lawrence, the creator of Scrubs, alongside Jeff Ingold of Ted Lasso and Liza Katzer of Shrinking — all working through Doozer Productions. Warner Bros. Television is the studio behind the project.
Halpern described his excitement about the show as rooted in a desire to capture the full range of growing up — the funny moments, the emotional ones, and the frequently humiliating ones — in a way that feels genuinely authentic rather than polished.
Netflix Vice President of Comedy Series Tracey Pakosta also expressed enthusiasm for the project, describing the creative team as having a rare ability to turn deeply personal and unconventional material into culture-defining series that balance sharp comedy with genuine human feeling.
What the Show Is About
Netflix has described the series as following three awkward high school sophomores navigating the messy, confusing world of teenage romance and identity — and coming to terms with the fact that struggling in that department is simply part of growing up.
The Cast
Three lead cast members were confirmed when the project was first announced. Kayo Martin, a newer face in the industry, leads the ensemble alongside Jeremy Ray Taylor — best known for playing the young Ben Hanscom in the It films and for his role in Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween — and Laila Pruitt, who appeared in Black Mafia Family and Will Trent.
Six additional cast members were confirmed on July 16, the same day filming began. Anna Konkle of Rosewood joins as Maria, Taegen Burns of Imaginary as Natalia, and Brianna Reed of The Mindy Project as Emmy. J.J. Nolan of Wizards Beyond Waverly Place plays Coach Doyle, Paul Scheer of The League takes on Mr. Jung, and Tory Kittles of Colony plays Principal Harrison.
I Suck at Girls does not yet have an official Netflix release date, though a 2027 premiere is expected based on the current filming schedule.
