Millie Bobby Brown’s Biggest Battle on the ‘Enola Holmes 3’ Set Had Nothing to Do With the Mystery

Millie Bobby Brown is back as the brilliant Enola Holmes — but before audiences get to watch her solve her latest case in Malta, the 22-year-old actress wants them to know exactly what it cost to film it.

Speaking during a June 24 conversation at 92NY for the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Brown revealed that the biggest challenge she faced while filming Enola Holmes 3 in Malta had absolutely nothing to do with her character’s storyline. Instead, it was the relentless, punishing heat that became her most formidable opponent on set — and it was made significantly worse by the fact that she and the rest of the cast were wearing full Victorian-era period costumes throughout production.

According to PEOPLE, Brown described the clothing as completely incompatible with the Mediterranean climate, noting that even staying physically comfortable was a daily battle in those conditions. The situation eventually escalated to the point where she found herself stepping outside her role as lead actress and into something closer to a welfare advocate for the entire production.

She told the podcast that she sat down directly with production and pushed for fans and air-conditioned tents to be brought onto the set, framing it as a genuine necessity rather than a luxury request. She described the two-month shoot as a period where keeping the cast and crew physically comfortable in the heat became almost as demanding as the acting itself.

Brown also drew a comparison to a previous filming experience that tested her in a similar way — Stranger Things Season 4, which was partially shot in the desert landscape of New Mexico. She recalled struggling to stay focused under that sun, with the brightness making it difficult just to keep her eyes open during takes. For Brown, environmental conditions on location shoots represent a genuinely underappreciated layer of difficulty that audiences rarely consider when watching the finished product.

Despite the physical toll of filming in Malta, Brown said the location itself was one of the aspects of the project she was most excited about — marking the first time the Enola Holmes franchise had stepped outside of London for its setting. She also noted a personal dimension to the film’s wedding-themed storyline, explaining that it carried added meaning given her own recent marriage, making the experience feel unexpectedly personal alongside everything else.

Enola Holmes 3 reunites Brown with co-stars Louis Partridge, Helena Bonham Carter, and Henry Cavill, who reprises his role as Sherlock Holmes. Himesh Patel joins the cast this time as Dr. Watson.

Enola Holmes 3 is now streaming on Netflix as of July 1.
