Grey’s Anatomy has made some changes. Meredith Grey will not be seen in the Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, the fictional setting of ABC‘s stalwart medical drama “Grey’s Anatomy.“
Ellen Pompeo played the character of Dr. Meredith Grey. Ellen Pompeo has played the character since 2005, for all 19 seasons and more than 400 episodes. Ellen Pompeo began as an intern in the series and became a surgical resident, then an attending surgeon, and then chief of surgery.
Now viewers won’t see Meredith again until the season 19 finale on May 26. Ellen Pompeo posted in her Instagram announcing the decision to the fans “This isn’t your first time on the roller coaster…you know the show must go on and I’ll definitely be back to visit,”.
In Meredith’s farewell episode, we saw Meredith’s friends and co-workers throwing a goodbye party after Meredith announced her decision to move with her family to Boston and as viewers, we can see the plane take off with Meredith and her three kids, including Zola who is played by Aniela Gumbs.

Grey’s Anatomy Update (2026)
Updated July 2026. Meredith Grey never fully left the show. Ellen Pompeo returned as a recurring guest star and narrator for Season 22, which premiered in October 2025, with Meredith splitting her time between Alzheimer’s research in Boston and visits back to Grey Sloan Memorial. ABC renewed the medical drama for a 23rd season on March 30, 2026, with showrunner Meg Marinis returning for her fourth year. The new season arrives without longtime cast members Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver, who are exiting as series regulars after the Season 22 finale, while Chandra Wilson, James Pickens Jr., Camilla Luddington, Caterina Scorsone and Chris Carmack are expected back.
