Matt Cornett Reveals How He and Sadie Soverall Built Real Chemistry Before Filming Every Year After

When the cameras weren’t rolling, these two co-stars were eating pizza and watching horror movies — and it shows. Matt Cornett, 27, is getting candid about how he and Sadie Soverall, 24, developed their on-screen connection before a single scene was ever filmed for Prime Video’s Every Year After, which officially debuts today, June 10. In a new interview with Boys by Girls, Cornett pulled back the curtain on the deliberate off-screen work that went into making his chemistry with Soverall feel completely natural.

It Started With a Zoom Call

The two first connected virtually — before even meeting in person — during a chemistry read ahead of casting. Producers gave them ten minutes to chat before the formal read began, and Cornett says the connection was immediate.

That initial spark set the tone for everything that followed. The moment both actors arrived in Vancouver for production, Cornett wasted no time — he texted Soverall that same evening and suggested they grab dinner together. From there, a genuine friendship took root.

Pizza, Horror Films, and a Method That Actually Worked

What makes Cornett’s approach particularly thoughtful is that it was directly inspired by the source material. In the books on which the series is based, his character Sam introduces Percy — played by Soverall — to the world of horror films, with their shared movie nights becoming a key part of their bond. Cornett decided to recreate that dynamic in real life.

The two kicked off their horror marathon with Evil Dead — the same film Sam and Percy watch together in the story — before working their way into the Halloween franchise. They only made it a few films into the series before the demands of the production schedule took over, but by that point, the off-screen foundation had already been built.

“She made every scene so easy and so fun,” Cornett said. “There was never a moment when it didn’t feel like Sam and Percy.”

Bonding With the Rest of the Cast

The off-set connection-building didn’t stop with Soverall. Cornett also made a point of spending time with co-stars Michael Bradway and Joseph Chiu, taking them out for golf outings and organizing group dinners and arcade nights when filming schedules allowed.

He acknowledged that coordinating the full cast wasn’t always easy — shooting schedules were scattered, and getting everyone in the same place at the same time required real effort. But when it worked, it clearly paid off. Cornett described developing individual friendships with each cast member and building the kind of shared humor that translates naturally on screen.

Every Year After is now streaming on Prime Video.
