The filming of the film started on August 10, 2015, in Los Angeles and filming took place in more than 60 locations both in and near Los Angeles.

Chazelle the director of the film wanted Los Angeles to be the primary setting for his film, and he wanted the musical numbers of the film to be filmed fully and performed in a single take. The film took 40 days to complete shooting, finishing in mid-September 2015.

The Rialto Theatre is a theater in South Pasadena, California. The theater is located on Fair Oaks Avenue, it is considered one of the last single-screen theaters in Southern California. Some scenes from the film were shot here when Mia & Sebastian attend “Rebel Without A Cause”.

2. Smoke House Restaurant

Smoke House Restaurant is a casual family-style restaurant. It offers a variety of starters, soups, salads, sandwiches, and desserts. The scene in which Mia discovers Sebastian’s talent for the piano was when he was playing in the fictional Lipton’s restaurant which was Smoke House Restaurant.

3. Cathy’s Corner, Mount Hollywood Drive

Cathy’s Corner can be found along a corner of Mt Hollywood Drive. The duo’s six-minute song-and-dance was shot at Cathy’s Corner near Mulholland Drive but a park bench and street lamp were only film setup.

The cafe is a jazz club since 1949, this spot now hosts an eclectic range of bands & serves brunch & bar food. Sebastian introduces Mia to “pure jazz” at this nightclub and many scenes were shot here.

The Los Angeles–Long Beach, CA Combined Statistical Area is also commonly referred to as the Greater Los Angeles Area. Greater Los Angeles is a Region in California. Greater Los Angeles is also the 2nd-largest metropolitan area in the United States.

This coastal city is noted for its attractions such as the Aquarium of the Pacific and Shoreline Village, as well as events like the Long Beach Pride Festival, and the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach. 3rd St. and Gaviota residential scenes of La La Land were shot in Long Beach which is a City in California and also a port in Southern California.

Also, Seb’s – interior scenes were filmed at The Blind Donkey – 149 Linden Ave. At 1735 Bird Way, the scenes in the film were recorded in which Sebastian walks down an alley and turns the wrong way onto a one-way street.

8. Santa Clarita

Santa Clarita is a City in California, It is located north of Los Angeles and is home to the Six Flags Magic Mountain theme park with roller coasters. There is also a water park here in the summer season, in which there are many long slides etc. Santa Clara is featured as Boulder City in the movie La La Land.

Additionally, scenes were filmed at Mia’s parents’ Boulder City home at 25851 Mendoza Dr, Santa Clarita.
