Joaquin Phoenix and Vanessa Kirby’s Intense Method Acting in “Napoleon” Sparks Controversy In the upcoming biopic “Napoleon,” directed by Ridley Scott, Oscar-winning actor Joaquin Phoenix and acclaimed actress Vanessa Kirby have taken method acting to a whole new level, pushing the boundaries of conventional on-set interactions.
During an interview with Empire Online, Phoenix confessed to slapping co-star Vanessa Kirby twice during the filming of an intense argument scene between their married characters.
However, what might have initially raised eyebrows was later clarified when it was revealed that both actors had consented to these actions as part of a mutual agreement to surprise each other during the shooting of the film.
The aim was to maintain the authenticity, intensity, and spontaneity of their scenes, allowing for improvisation in their physical interactions. “We were using the real words from their divorce in the church,” explained Vanessa Kirby. “But we always wanted to surprise each other and keep the moments fresh.”
Despite the controversial nature of their approach, both Phoenix and Kirby have expressed deep admiration for each other as creative partners and emphasized the sense of safety and trust they maintained throughout the filming process. Their dedication to exploring dark themes together and challenging each other as actors has resulted in a powerful portrayal of Napoleon Bonaparte’s tumultuous relationship with his wife, Josephine.
“Napoleon” features a star-studded cast, including Joaquin Phoenix in the lead role and Vanessa Kirby as Josephine, along with talented actors like Ben Miles, Ludivine Sagnier, Ian McNeice, Tahar Rahim, Catherine Walker, Paul Rhys, and Matthew Needham.
The screenplay, penned by David Scarpa, promises an intimate portrait of Napoleon’s rise to power and the complexities of his marriage. The film is scheduled to hit theaters on November 22, 2023, and will be distributed worldwide by Apple Studios in collaboration with Sony Pictures under Columbia Pictures.
Additionally, the movie will be made available on Apple TV+ at a later date

Napoleon Update (2026)
Updated July 2026. The unscripted slap between Joaquin Phoenix and Vanessa Kirby, born from the pair’s on-set pact to “shock each other” during their divorce-scene confrontation, became one of the most talked-about behind-the-scenes stories from Ridley Scott’s Napoleon. Kirby later explained the moment came from a place of creative trust, saying the two actors agreed to take the scene wherever it needed to go. The film went on to earn over $200 million worldwide following its November 2023 release and later moved to Apple TV+ for streaming, where the collaborative, take-risks approach between its two leads remains a frequently cited example of committed screen acting.
