Singer and actress Jill Scott is looking back at her acting career as she prepares to release new music. While talking about her past work, she shared an honest and emotional memory from the 2007 romantic–drama movie Why Did I Get Married?, directed by Tyler Perry.
Jill Scott recently spoke about this experience during an interview on the IRL with Angie Martinez podcast. She explained that while she enjoyed much of the filming process, one particular scene made her very uncomfortable and stayed with her long after the movie was finished.
In the film, Jill Scott played Sheila, a kind woman who is often treated badly by her husband, Mike. The character goes through emotional pain, especially because people make fun of her body and weight. Jill said that playing this role was difficult because the harsh words spoken to the character felt too real at times.
She pointed to a scene set on an airplane as the hardest one to film. In that moment, Sheila is embarrassed and mocked, and Jill explained that the extras in the scene were told to make jokes about her character’s size. To play the role, Jill wore a fat suit, which made the scene feel even more uncomfortable and exhausting.
Jill shared that hearing so many jokes, even though they were meant for the character, felt hurtful and overwhelming. She said it felt less like acting and more like being picked on. While she understood the message the scene was trying to show, the experience itself was something she did not enjoy.
Despite this, Jill said the moment helped her grow as a person. After filming, she thought deeply about how people see bodies and how labels can hurt. She decided that she would not let anyone define her by her appearance and chose to see herself as strong, creative, and multi-dimensional.
Jill Scott also made it clear that her feelings were not directed at everyone on set. She praised her co-star Richard T. Jones, calling him one of the kindest people she has ever worked with. She said that even though his character was mean in the movie, he was the complete opposite in real life.
Looking back, Jill Scott says the film taught her important lessons about self-worth, empathy, and strength. Her story is a reminder that behind powerful scenes on screen, actors often go through real emotions to make those moments feel real for audiences.
