Jennifer Grey Officially Returns for ‘Dirty Dancing’ Sequel as Filming Plans Move Forward

Jennifer Grey is officially stepping back into one of her most famous roles. The Dirty Dancing star has confirmed she will return as Frances “Baby” Houseman in the long-awaited sequel to the classic 1987 movie. The new film, titled “Dirty Dancing 2,” is expected to begin filming later in 2026, marking a major moment for fans who have waited decades for this update.

The news was first reported by The Wrap, which confirmed that Jennifer Grey, now 65, will reprise her Golden Globe–nominated role. The sequel is written by Kim Rosenstock, and Jennifer Grey will also serve as an executive producer, giving her a strong voice in how the story continues. Speaking about the project, Jennifer Grey shared that she has spent years thinking about where Baby’s life might be today and wanted the right creative team to protect the heart of the original film. She said she believes that moment has finally arrived.

According to The Wrap, production plans are now moving ahead with confidence. Adam Fogelson, chair of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, said the studio is moving “full steam ahead” with what he described as a big-screen theatrical movie, designed to honor the original while offering something new.

The original “Dirty Dancing,” released in 1987, was directed by Emile Ardolino and written by Eleanor Bergstein. The story followed Baby during a summer at Kellerman’s resort in the Catskills, where she fell in love with dance instructor Johnny Castle, played by Patrick Swayze. The film became a global hit and remains beloved for its music, romance, and iconic dance scenes.

It is still unclear how Johnny’s character will be addressed in the sequel. Patrick Swayze passed away in 2009 after a battle with pancreatic cancer, and the filmmakers have not yet shared details about his role in the new story.

The sequel was first teased in April 2022 during Lionsgate’s CinemaCon presentation, where footage from the original film played alongside a message promising Baby’s return to Kellerman’s in a new chapter.

The original movie won the Academy Award for Best Original Song for “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life,” which remains one of the most famous final dance scenes in movie history. Over the years, “Dirty Dancing” has inspired stage versions, a short-lived TV series, “Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights” in 2004, and a TV remake in 2017.

With Jennifer Grey officially confirmed and filming plans now in place, the next chapter of “Dirty Dancing” is finally becoming real.
