Hilary Duff Reveals the One Outfit She Couldn’t Stand While Filming The Lizzie McGuire Movie

Last updated

Hilary Duff is looking back at her time filming one of her most loved movies, but not everything from that experience made her happy.

The actress, who became famous for playing Lizzie McGuire, recently shared a surprising detail about her wardrobe during the filming of The Lizzie McGuire Movie. The film, which first came out in 2003, is still remembered by fans today for its music, fashion, and fun story.

During a conversation with Vanity Fair, Duff spoke honestly about her time on set. She revealed that there was one outfit she truly did not like at all.

“I remember hating this green Isabella outfit so much,” she said during the interview.

In the movie, Hilary Duff played two roles — Lizzie McGuire and a famous Italian pop star named Isabella Parigi. The green outfit appeared during a big performance scene in Rome, where Lizzie pretends to be Isabella on stage.

The look was bold and flashy. It included a green shiny jacket, a mini skirt with sparkly fabric, fishnet leggings, and glittery boots. There was also a green heart-shaped choker to complete the style. Even though fans later loved this outfit, Duff said she did not enjoy wearing it at the time.

She also explained that filming the movie felt very different from working on the TV show Lizzie McGuire. One big change was the costumes.

“The costumer from the movie made all the outfits original,” Duff shared in the same interview with Vanity Fair.

On the TV show, Duff had more control over what her character wore. She said she was able to help choose her clothes, which made her feel more comfortable. But in the movie, things were different, and she had less say in the final looks.

“Unlike the TV show where I picked all my clothes… not so much in the movie,” she explained.

Even though she did not like the famous green outfit, Duff admitted that the costume team still did a great job overall. She also shared one thing she really liked — Isabella’s brown wig, which became part of the character’s signature look.

Today, the green outfit is one of the most iconic styles from The Lizzie McGuire Movie, especially during the final performance of “What Dreams Are Made Of.” Fans continue to remember the scene as a special moment in early 2000s pop culture.

For Duff, the memory is a mix of fun, growth, and a little bit of fashion regret from her filming days.

Lizzie McGuire Reboot Update: Still Shelved, Duff Stays Open (2026)

Updated September 2026. The Lizzie McGuire reboot remains shelved more than two years after Disney canceled it following two filmed episodes, reportedly over disagreements about keeping the show at a PG rating versus Duff’s push for a more mature, adult version of the character. Speaking with Jay Shetty in March 2026, Duff said she couldn’t picture Lizzie at 40, but could see revisiting her around 55 or 60 — suggesting any future return is decades away rather than imminent. Earlier in the year she’d described herself as “optimistic” the project could eventually move forward, though no new plans have been announced.
