Spoiler Alert: This story reveals key details from Half Man Episode 2.
HBO’s newest limited series Half Man has quickly become the show everyone is talking about — and one scene in particular is stopping viewers cold. Now, the director who brought that scene to screen is sharing exactly what it felt like to read it for the very first time.
Alexandra Brodski, who directed episodes one through three of the six-part series, sat down with Entertainment Weekly to discuss the jaw-dropping Episode 2 ending — a moment she says hit her just as hard as it hit audiences.
“I just did everything I could to communicate that feeling because I think it is so shocking,” the London-based filmmaker said, describing her mission while shooting the sequence.

What Happens in Episode 2?
The episode follows a younger version of Niall, portrayed by Mitchell Robertson, during his early days at university. Things take a dark turn when a fellow student named Ruben, played by Stuart Campbell, begins causing chaos in his life. A kind and warm classmate, Alby — played by Bilal Hasna — becomes a source of comfort and connection for Niall, gently helping him explore his identity. But that peace is shattered when Ruben viciously attacks Alby in the common room, leaving him severely injured and barely recognizable.
Right as viewers are processing the violence, the episode suddenly leaps forward in time to a wedding. The person getting married? Adult Niall, now portrayed by Jamie Bell. His groom? Adult Alby, played by Charlie de Melo — who still visibly bears the scars from that savage attack years ago. The emotional weight of that connection hits the audience all at once.
Making the wedding scene even more unsettling is the unexpected arrival of Ruben — now played by series writer and creator Richard Gadd himself. Gadd, who became a household name after his show Baby Reindeer swept the Emmy Awards, reportedly gained nearly 100 lbs. to fully transform himself for the role of Ruben, making himself almost unrecognizable on screen.
“We basically combined, like, five different locations” — Alexandra Brodski, speaking to Entertainment Weekly
Behind the camera, building the wedding setting was no simple task. Brodski revealed that what feels like one unified, grand location on screen was actually pieced together from around five separate filming locations. The production team spent considerable time hunting for places with the right kind of stone architecture — a challenge because most available sites only had one matching building surrounded by modern structures. The team had to blend multiple spots together to create the final look.
The chapel scene — where the Alby identity twist is revealed — was actually one of the last things filmed during the entire production schedule. Some creative decisions were made well in advance, while others took shape much later. One late addition was the track “Only You” by Yaz, which was layered into the chapel sequence during post-production editing.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Brodski described the overall approach as a balance between preparation and spontaneity. The goal, she said, was to leave viewers genuinely shocked — but also curious enough to keep watching and piece together how the story got to that point.
New episodes of Half Man air every Thursday at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HBO and HBO Max.
