How do teams qualify from the groups?
This is the part that confuses people, so let me keep it simple.
The top two teams in each of the 12 groups automatically advance. That is 24 teams.
Then the eight best third-placed teams across all groups also go through, bringing the knockout field to 32. Tiebreakers run on points, then goal difference, then goals scored.

Which is the toughest group?
Every World Cup sparks a “group of death” debate, and 2026 has a few candidates.
Group H stands out, pairing Spain with a dangerous Uruguay and a tricky Saudi Arabia side. Group L (England, Croatia, Ghana, Panama) is also loaded at the top.
Group C is fascinating too, with Brazil facing a strong Morocco side that has become a genuine knockout threat.
For who escapes these groups, follow our standings guide.
How the World Cup draw worked
The 48 teams were seeded into four pots based largely on the FIFA rankings, with hosts placed in advance.
Teams were then drawn into the 12 groups with confederation restrictions, so most groups cannot contain two teams from the same region (with limited European exceptions).
That is why you rarely see, say, two South American giants in the same group.
Groups to watch for drama
Beyond the heavyweights, keep an eye on the host groups.
Group A (Mexico) and Group D (USA) carry huge home-crowd energy, while Group B features co-host Canada chasing a knockout spot.
Underdog stories usually emerge from the middle groups, so do not ignore the so-called minnows. Full field is in our teams guide.
Group-stage scenarios to watch
The math of a four-team group creates fascinating final-day drama.
Because the top two plus the best third-placed teams advance, a side can sometimes progress with a single win and a draw, depending on goal difference.
That makes the third round of group games tense, since teams must balance attacking for goals with not overcommitting and conceding.
Watch for the so-called “group of death” pools, where a genuine contender could go home early. In an expanded field, even a famous name is not guaranteed safe passage.
