Filming on Taylor Sheridan’s productions is never exactly smooth sailing — but Cole Hauser just revealed one on-set moment that takes the cake.
During a recent appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show, the 51-year-old actor, best known for playing Rip Wheeler, shared that a rattlesnake den discovered at a Texas filming location completely shut down production for the night. Hauser said the director and cinematographer Christina stumbled upon somewhere between 40 to 50 rattlesnakes at one location near Fort Worth, forcing the entire crew to pack up and walk away.
“That particular location we were at, we actually were going to go from there at night and got turned away,” Hauser explained. And that wasn’t even a one-off situation. Over just eight months of filming, the cast and crew encountered a staggering 3,400 rattlesnakes in the area.
Co-star Kelly Reilly, who plays Beth Dutton, was right there alongside Hauser during the interview and recalled hearing about the snake den herself — clearly still shaken by the numbers.
This kind of wild, unpredictable filming experience is starting to feel like a pattern across Sheridan’s universe. Michelle Pfeiffer, who stars as Stacy Clyburn in Sheridan’s latest Paramount+ series The Madison, recently opened up about her own brutal conditions on set in Montana and Texas — no bathrooms, no trailers, no AC, no food, and freezing winters. “You may as well be in a tent,” Pfeiffer said, adding that the crew was shooting 360 degrees, which meant trailers couldn’t even be placed nearby. It took nearly halfway through production before basic accommodations were finally sorted out.
Yet despite the snakes, the heat, the cold, and the lack of basic comforts — the results speak for themselves. Dutton Ranch premiered on Paramount+ on May 15 and The Madison recently became Sheridan’s biggest series launch ever.
Apparently, suffering for the art is just part of the deal in Sheridan’s world.
