The story follows Alison Woods, a deaf woman who makes food for parties to help take care of her mom and herself. One day, the police ask Alison to help them by reading lips during talks with dangerous people. While helping, Alison starts to like one of the suspects, but she keeps working with the police to solve the case.

Though a fire gutted the interior in 1883, it was meticulously rebuilt in the same style and remains a private residence of the Byng family.
