Christopher Knight Calls Filming This ‘The Brady Bunch’ Episode the “Bleakest Week” of His Life

Christopher Knight, best known for playing Peter Brady on the classic TV show The Brady Bunch, has opened up about a painful memory from his time on set. While fans still laugh at the famous episode where Peter’s voice keeps cracking, Knight says filming it was one of the hardest weeks of his young life.

The episode, titled “Dough Re Mi,” aired in 1972 during season three of The Brady Bunch, which originally ran from 1969 to 1974. In the story, Greg Brady, played by Barry Williams, writes a song for his siblings. But Peter’s changing voice keeps interrupting the performance. His voice cracks again and again, turning the moment into comedy for viewers.

Speaking on the Feb. 20 episode of The Morning Mix podcast, Knight shared how difficult that week was for him. He said he believed the writers were making fun of his real-life singing ability.

“That was the bleakest week of my life,” Knight said during the podcast. He explained that he thought the show’s adult creators were pointing out that he was not a good singer. At the time, he felt embarrassed and uncomfortable while filming those scenes.

Knight admitted he never felt confident about singing or dancing. He said he would “suck it up” whenever musical scenes were written into the show. Over time, as Barry Williams wanted to do more singing, the writers added more musical numbers. That is how the storyline for Peter’s cracking voice came about.

Looking back now, Knight sees the episode in a different way. As an adult, he feels the episode “works” and is funny. He said it was actually a special moment for his character. But as a young actor, he did not see it that way. He remembered feeling “upside down with embarrassment” during filming.

Years later, Knight faced his fear of singing again. In 2022, he appeared on The Masked Singer alongside his former co-stars Barry Williams and Mike Lookinland, who played Bobby Brady. The trio performed in mummy costumes. Speaking to PEOPLE, Knight shared that joining the show was meaningful because singing had always made him uncomfortable.

He also revealed that during the original series, he never had a solo. He would even stand back from the microphone so his voice would not stand out in group songs.

Today, Knight and Williams host a rewatch podcast called The Real Brady Bros. Through revisiting old episodes, Knight says he finally understands why The Brady Bunch continues to be loved by fans. The show, he said, “transcended its original purpose.”

For viewers, the voice-cracking episode remains a funny and unforgettable part of television history. But for Christopher Knight, it will always be remembered as a week filled with nerves, embarrassment, and personal growth.
