Carol Burnett Reveals Julie Andrews Sent Her Naughty Poems During ‘The Sound of Music’ Filming

Carol Burnett has shared a sweet and funny story from her long friendship with Julie Andrews, showing a playful side fans rarely hear about.

In a recent Good Hang With Amy Poehler podcast, the legendary comedian looked back on how her bond with Andrews began and how it grew during one of the most famous movie shoots in history. Burnett explained that while Andrews was busy filming the classic The Sound of Music in the mid-1960s, she still found time to make her friend laugh in unexpected ways.

Carol Burnett said she first met Andrews when both women were working on Broadway. At the time, Burnett was starring as Princess Winnifred in the musical Once Upon a Mattress, while Andrews was playing Queen Guenevere in Camelot. Mutual friends believed the two performers shared a similar spirit and suggested they meet.

That first meeting quickly turned into a lifelong friendship. Carol Burnett joked that once they sat down together, they never stopped talking. She described their connection as instant and natural, saying it felt like they had known each other forever.

While Burnett’s career continued to rise in television and comedy, Andrews became a global film star with The Sound of Music in 1965. Even though Carol Burnett did not attend the film’s premiere, she stayed closely connected to Andrews during the shoot.

Burnett revealed that Andrews used to send her “dirty limericks” while filming the movie. She said the poems were clever, funny, and completely unexpected from the actress known for playing wholesome characters. Burnett also shared that Andrews once wrote a full parody of the famous song “These Are a Few of My Favorite Things,” calling it brilliant but too naughty to repeat.

The two stars later worked together on several successful TV specials, starting with Julie and Carol at Carnegie Hall in 1962. Their collaborations continued over the years and became beloved by audiences.

Speaking to PEOPLE in 2023, Andrews described their friendship as deep and lasting, saying they always understood each other from the start. She also praised Burnett’s strength, humor, and kindness.

Even after decades in entertainment, the friendship between Carol Burnett and Julie Andrews remains full of laughter, trust, and shared memories that continue to delight fans around the world.
