The filming of the film has been paused until the Writers Guild of America strike will be resolved. The decision was made on 15 June 2023 after production was paused because the producers of the movie failed to convince the WGA that the co-financing status of Wayfarer Studios will be within the WGA guidelines.

According to Deadline, around 140 people are now out of jobs because of this shutdown. Along with the Last of Us some other popular projects have all been delayed or affected by the ongoing strikes which include Daredevil: Born Again, The Penguin, Yellowstone spin-off 1923, and Severance.
