Blade Runner 2099 Filming Locations (2026-)

Published

Blade Runner 2099 is a 2026 sci-fi thriller series that continues the world of Blade Runner, set 50 years after Blade Runner 2049. The show was created by Silka Luisa, who is also the showrunner, and the first two episodes were directed by Jonathan van Tulleken, who also worked on Shogun.

Michelle Yeoh plays Olwen, a Replicant Blade Runner, and Hunter Schafer plays Cora, a human on the run. Dimitri Abold, Lewis Gribben, Tom Burke and Johnny Harris are also in the cast. The story is set in Los Angeles, but the crew built most of that future world in Prague, Czech Republic, with more work reported in Barcelona, Spain. If you enjoy sci-fi stories, our series section has plenty more.

Cora has spent her whole life on the run. To escape her past, she takes on a new identity as a Blade Runner. She is paired with Olwen, a Replicant who has only a few days left to live. Together they hunt for a runaway whose secret could put their fragile city at risk. The two women slowly uncover a secret at the center of society, and it may change everything they believe.

Blade Runner 2099 premieres on November 25, 2026. All eight episodes arrive on the same day.

The series streams on Prime Video. It is made by Scott Free Productions, Alcon Television Group, Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television, as listed on Wikipedia. Ridley Scott is an executive producer. Fans of the platform can find more shows in our Prime Video section.

GenresSci-Fi, Thriller, Mystery, Drama
Filming LocationsPrague, Czech Republic (Barrandov Studios) and Barcelona, Spain (reported)
Filming DatesJune 2024 to December 2024 (main shoot)
Cinematography byRob Hardy, Ula Pontikos, Vanja Černjul and Damián García
Release DateNovember 25, 2026

The show was first planned for Belfast, Northern Ireland, but the 2023 writers’ strike delayed it, and the team later moved to the Czech Republic. The crew arrived in Prague in early May 2024, and filming began in June 2024, as noted on Wikipedia. Collider confirmed that the shoot was planned for both Prague and Spain, and JoBlo reported the wrap on December 29-30, 2024.

The Czech Film Commission lists 114 filming days in the country from June 30, 2024 to April 16, 2025, so some work may have continued after the main wrap. The cinematography is credited to four people: Rob Hardy, Ula Pontikos, Vanja Černjul and Damián García. For more shoots from across the continent, visit our Europe page.

📍Barrandov Studios, Prague

Address: Kříženeckého nám. 322/5, 152 00 Praha 5-Hlubočepy, Czechia

Barrandov Studios was the main base, and the Czech Film Commission says the series used the studio for 73 days. The big indoor sets for the future city were built here, and Czech Radio reported that the production might use nearly all of the studio’s space. Jordan Studios, also in Prague, is listed too. The budget was said to be over CZK 1 billion, partly thanks to Czech film incentives. Studios are working lots, so they are not open to visitors.

📍Streets and Landmarks of Prague

The Czech Film Commission also lists several places in the capital: St. Gabriel Church, the KOH-I-NOOR building, and the districts of Háje, Strahov, Hradčanská and Bubeneč. The list does not say which scenes were shot at each spot, so we cannot match them to episodes yet. Prague has been a busy film city lately, and we have also covered The Crow and the Charles Bridge scenes in One Life. To see more titles from this country, browse our Czech Republic collection.

📍Quarries and Towns Around Prague

The same list names spots outside the city, such as the Mayrau Mining Museum in Vinařice, the Borek and Homolák quarries, Mělník, Slapy and Jablonec nad Nisou. Quarries and old mines are a common choice for sci-fi shows because they look like another planet or a ruined city. Again, the listing only names the places, and no official source says what was shot in each one.

📍Barcelona, Spain

After Prague, the crew moved to Barcelona, according to JoBlo. Collider only says “Spain” without naming a city, so we are treating Barcelona as reported for now. No streets or buildings have been shared yet. The mix is interesting, because the story is set on the California coast, and Spain’s sunny Mediterranean light could help match the show’s bright look.

Blade Runner 2099 Behind the Scenes

Showrunner Silka Luisa describes the show’s look as “sunshine noir,” a hot, bright future instead of the rainy, neon streets of the earlier films. She told Entertainment Weekly, via JoBlo, that it was important for Ridley Scott to be part of the development, and that the team used practical sets and real locations instead of relying only on computer effects.

When the shoot ended, director Karena Evans announced the wrap on Instagram with a behind-the-scenes look at the cast and crew celebrating, as reported by Collider. We could not open Instagram to find the direct link, so we are not linking it here. The news also spread on X, where DiscussingFilm posted on December 29, 2024 that the series “has wrapped filming.”

Hunter Schafer has also talked about the set. In an EW interview, she described being covered in “weird goo” for a key scene. She said she and Michelle Yeoh bonded both on and off the screen, and called their first big scene together harrowing.

We will add more cast and crew Instagram posts and set photos here as soon as they are shared.
