Hollywood activity lit up Central New Jersey last week as The Idea of You star Anne Hathaway and Oscar-winning director Ron Howard were seen filming scenes for their upcoming war drama movie “Alone at Dawn.” The production took place in Edison Township, drawing attention from local residents and officials.
According to reports shared by Edison Mayor Sam Joshi, the film is based on a true story and honors U.S. Air Force Tech Sgt. John Chapman, a combat veteran who served in Afghanistan and was later posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his bravery. The story focuses on Chapman’s actions during the intense Battle of Takur Ghar in March 2002.
The movie “Alone at Dawn” is inspired by the book of the same name written by Dan Schilling and Lori Chapman, the sister of John Chapman. The book details how Chapman continued fighting alone to protect his teammates after being left behind during combat. He was fatally wounded while defending his fellow soldiers.
Anne Hathaway, a New Jersey native and former Millburn High School student, plays the role of an investigator in the film. This is not her first project filmed in the state. She has previously worked on several productions shot in New Jersey, including parts of “The Devil Wears Prada 2,” which is expected to release later this year.
The cast of “Alone at Dawn” also includes Adam Driver, who portrays John Chapman, along with Lauren Hutton and Betty Gilpin. Ron Howard was also seen filming scenes earlier in Linden, New Jersey, with local police confirming his presence on set.
Filming in Edison took place for one day at two residential locations near Melville Road and Glenville Road, close to Edison High School. Several streets were temporarily closed, and local homes were used during production. Mayor Joshi noted that many police officers were hired to manage traffic and ensure safety.
Speaking to MyCentralJersey, Joshi highlighted Edison’s deep connection to filmmaking, referencing Thomas Edison, who invented the motion picture camera in the township. He also shared that Edison recently joined New Jersey’s Film Ready Program, which helps towns attract and support on-location productions.
Local officials say projects like this boost the local economy and place New Jersey back in the spotlight as a major filming destination.
