The ThunderCats movie reboot has received an exciting update from director Adam Wingard after years of silence on the live-action project, because of which the movie script is back in active development by the director.
Upcoming Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire Director Adam Wingard has prioritized the ThunderCats movie reboot despite his busy schedule and confirmed his ongoing work on the script.
Director Adam Wingard joined the ThunderCats movie reboot project three years ago and now the latest update has been received.
A concept for the animated film is already in the works at Warner Bros. and Wingard has been signed on to write and direct the film in early 2021.
Wingard joined an interview with io9 for the upcoming Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire release, In which he also gave an update on the upcoming reboot of Thundercats.
Wingard said:-
“Simon [Barrett] and I are still actively working on the script,”
“We finished our last draft basically right when I was going into production on this movie and we just had to put everything on hold. [But] right now we’re actively working on it again. So whether that means that’s the next thing I do or [not], I’m not sure. But it’s definitely one of the top priorities I have right now in terms of working on a script.”

ThunderCats Movie Update (2026)
Updated August 2026. Adam Wingard’s live-action/CG hybrid “ThunderCats” film remains in development at Warner Bros., though it still has no confirmed release date, cast, or start of production as of August 2026. Wingard has continued to describe the project as a priority he’s writing alongside longtime collaborator Simon Barrett. Separately, Warner Bros. Animation announced an all-new animated ThunderCats movie at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, a project the studio has not linked to Wingard’s live-action version. With two ThunderCats films now moving through the pipeline in different forms, fans of the franchise have more reason to watch for updates, even without a firm timeline yet.
