Lauren Graham has spent years turning down Gilmore Girls projects that didn’t include her creative partner — and now she finally has one she can say yes to.
HBO Max has confirmed that an official Gilmore Girls documentary is currently in production, marking the first “authorized” documentary ever made about the beloved series, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The untitled film is being directed by Bonni Cohen, whose previous documentary credits include Athlete A and An Inconvenient Sequel, and is produced by R.J. Cutler’s Sony-based This Machine banner in association with Warner Horizon Unscripted Television.

Why This Documentary Is Different
Graham, who played Lorelai Gilmore across the show’s original seven-season run, is confirmed to participate — alongside series creator Amy Sherman-Palladino and executive producer Daniel Palladino. That combination is significant.
When a separate independent documentary about the show, Drink Coffee, Talk Fast, was announced in 2025, Graham made her position clear on the Emmy Awards red carpet. She told Entertainment Tonight that she doesn’t participate in any Gilmore Girls project that Sherman-Palladino isn’t part of. End of discussion.
This time, Sherman-Palladino is not only participating — she’s an executive producer on the film. So Graham is in.
What the Documentary Will Cover
The film will offer an insider view into the creation of Gilmore Girls, told directly from Sherman-Palladino and Palladino’s perspective, and will include never-before-seen outtakes, behind-the-scenes footage, and script pages. The official description promises an exploration of how the show “eclipsed expectations to become a cross-generational phenomenon” — unpacking the specific creative chemistry between the show’s creators, cast, crew, and collaborators that made it work.
Additional cast and crew members beyond Graham and the Palladinos are expected to participate, though no further names have been confirmed at this stage.
The Book Is Also Coming
The documentary isn’t the only Gilmore Girls project Graham and Sherman-Palladino are working on together. The two are co-writing a behind-the-scenes book about the making of the show, set for a fall 2027 publication through Celadon Books. Graham described the collaboration as something she finds genuinely moving — noting that Sherman-Palladino initiating it feels like a meaningful acknowledgment of how their professional relationship has evolved over 25 years.
Gilmore Girls premiered in October 2000 on The WB, ran for seven seasons, and celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2025. It remains one of the most beloved family dramas in television history.
