Rapunzel’s Tower Is Real: Disney’s Live-Action ‘Tangled’ Begins Filming in Alicante, Spain

Disney’s long-awaited live-action remake of Tangled has officially moved from development into production, with first-look images of the iconic tower set now confirming that cameras are rolling.

According to Screen Rant, filming is taking place at Ciudad de la Luz studios in Alicante, Spain, following six months of negotiations between the production and regional authorities. The president of the Generalitat Valenciana, Juanfran Perez Llorca, confirmed the location has been designated as the “coordination center” for the production — a significant vote of confidence in the studio’s infrastructure and capabilities.

The first images from set were shared by actress Camryn Manheim, mother of lead star Milo Manheim, who plays Flynn Rider in the remake. In her caption, she described traveling from Barcelona to Alicante to reconnect with friends and watch her son work — offering fans their first genuine glimpse of the production in motion.

Teagan Croft’s Haircut Tells Its Own Story

One of the most talked-about details surrounding the production is Teagan Croft’s new look. The actress, who plays Rapunzel, recently debuted a short pixie cut — a visual spoiler of sorts that directly corresponds to the film’s climactic moment, when Rapunzel’s magical hair is cut during the final confrontation between Flynn and Kathryn Hahn’s Mother Gothel. The fact that Croft has already made the change suggests filming has progressed significantly into the story.

The Creative Team Behind the Remake

The live-action adaptation is helmed by Michael Gracey, best known for directing The Greatest Showman. The screenplay is expected to retain the musical elements that made the 2010 animated original a global phenomenon — including beloved songs like “I See the Light,” which earned the film an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song. The original Tangled grossed over $592 million worldwide and remains one of Disney’s most-streamed titles on Disney+.

Adding an entirely new dimension to the story is Diego Luna of Andor, who has joined the cast in a mystery role created specifically for this version of the film. Details about his character are being kept tightly under wraps for now.

The core story — a girl locked in a tower who escapes with the help of a wanted thief — remains intact and draws from the classic Brothers Grimm fairy tale originally published in 1812, itself believed to trace back to even earlier sources including a 10th-century Persian tale.

With fan expectations running high and mixed reactions to previous Disney live-action remakes fresh in audiences’ minds, all eyes will be on how Gracey and his team bring Rapunzel’s world to life. An official release date has not yet been announced.
