‘Superman’ Filming is Longer Than You Think, Says James Gunn

Superman writer and director James Gunn reveals some facts about filming, including how long shooting lasts on average and what impact the amount of VFX has.

In early May, the director expressed concern that the shooting of the 2013 film The Man of Steel would only last 5 to 6 months.

James Gunn posted about the film’s shortcomings on Twitter and even responded to many people. He believed this was too short and was concerned it would be too heavy on the film.

James Gunn also shared information about the film’s production and clearly stated that it would be wrapped by mid-July.

Someone also admitted that the film was shot too much and shared that CGI effects should have been included.

But Gunn denied some facts regarding the filming, saying, “My longest schedule ever for a movie.”

James Gunn began his response by acknowledging that shootings typically last six or so months.”That’s an incorrect assumption on how long shoots are by people I’m guessing aren’t in the film industry.”

“Five months is very, very long for any shoot – top 1% of films made – ones that are more are generally ones that go over the schedule for one reason or another.

Planning to shoot over six months almost never happens,” he added.

He further commented on the number of visual effects in relation to the role: “It’s also incorrect to assume that shooting time is reduced greatly or, really, at all, by lots of visual effects.”

Change confirmed in the headline by Gunn for first writing about the inclusion of the famous “S” on his Superman costume

“Overjoyed to be announcing the start of principal photography on SUPERMAN today, February 29, which happens to be – coincidentally and unplanned – Superman’s birthday.”

“When I finished the script’s first draft, I called the film Superman: Legacy. When I locked the final draft, it was clear the title was SUPERMAN. Making our way to you July 2025.”

On the 12th of April, James Gunn also posted a group photo of the crew, captioned “After the table, read with the #Superman cast. Eve, Mr. Terrific, Superman/Clark, Otis, Lex, producer Peter Safran, Jimmy, Metamorpho, Lois, Hawkgirl, me, Guy, and The Engineer all together for the first time! What a wonderful day.”

When James Gunn announced the Superman movie

The film was announced in 2023 by a media tweet with a heartfelt caption, “Yes, I’m directing Superman: Legacy to be released on July 11, 2025. My brother Matt told me that he started to cry when he saw the release date. I asked him why. He said, ‘Dude, it’s Dad’s birthday.’ I hadn’t realized.”

He confirmed by stating, ” lost my Dad almost three years ago. He was my best friend. He didn’t understand me as a kid, but he supported my love of comics and film, and I wouldn’t be making this movie now without him. It has been a long road to this point.

I was offered Superman years ago. I initially said no because I didn’t have a way in which it felt unique, fun, and emotional, which gave Superman the dignity he deserved.

Then, a bit less than a year ago, I saw a way in, in many ways centering around Superman’s heritage – how both his aristocratic Kryptonian parents and his Kansas farmer parents inform who he is and the choices he makes”

The film is directed and written by James Gunn, with David Corenswet as Kal-El/Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner/Green Lantern, Isabella Merced as Hawkgirl, Eddie Gathegi as Mister Terrific.
