Rialto Bridge Location: Map
Where Is the Rialto Bridge?
The Rialto Bridge sits at the narrowest point of the Grand Canal in the historic center of Venice, Italy, linking the San Marco and San Polo districts. It’s the oldest of the four bridges that cross the Grand Canal, and the single stone arch you see today — designed by Antonio da Ponte, who beat out Michelangelo in the design competition — was completed in 1591, replacing a run of wooden bridges dating back to 1181.
How to Get to the Rialto Bridge
Take the vaporetto (water bus) Line 1 or 2 to the Rialto stop, which puts you right at the foot of the bridge. On foot, it’s about a 10–15 minute walk from Piazza San Marco through the narrow calli, well signposted the whole way. There’s no vehicle access anywhere in central Venice, so walking or the vaporetto are the only options.
What’s Near the Rialto Bridge
The Rialto Market (Mercato di Rialto), with its centuries-old fish and produce stalls, is right at the San Polo end of the bridge. St. Mark’s Square is a short walk away on the San Marco side, and the bridge itself is lined with two arcades of small shops and jewelers — it’s been a commercial hub since the 16th century, not just a crossing point.
Movies & TV Shows Filmed at the Rialto Bridge
Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019) gives the bridge its biggest screen moment: right after Mysterio’s illusory water monster attacks, Tom Holland’s Peter Parker is thrown into action on the edge of the stone bridge itself, in one of the film’s standout set pieces.
Casino Royale (2006) shot scenes around the Rialto area, including the Rialto Fish Market and the building facades near the bridge, as part of its Venice finale sequence on the Grand Canal.
The Merchant of Venice (2004), starring Al Pacino and Jeremy Irons, filmed extensively on location in Venice, including the Rialto Bridge and Grand Canal, fitting given the play’s own Rialto-set dialogue.
The Tourist (2010) also used the bridge and the Grand Canal as a backdrop for several of its Venice-set chase and romance scenes.
